On 31st. August 2002, two new, large vessels commenced a daily service between Melbourne and Devonport. Regular crossings are overnight with extra daytime ones in peak periods.

Both vessels carry all types of vehicles at very low cost.

The ships, Spirit of Tasmania I and II, sail 10 hours overnight, offering safe, comfortable travel for 1300 passengers in a range of accommodation from sleeper chairs to Deluxe cabins. The majority of berths are in twin, three and four berth cabins. All cabins have private facilities. The ships are fully equipped with restaurants, games areas, lounges, bars and gaming rooms, for your enjoyment. Fares range from $139 to $418 single, depending on time of year and cabin/seat type.

In peak times, additional daylight crossings are provided and passengers may travel without allocated space at a reduced passenger fare, although cabins may also be purchased, if required.

Air

Virgin, Jetstar and Qantas airlines operate to Launceston and Hobart from Melbourne, with direct
flights from Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast also.

Rex airlines operate regular flights from
Melbourne to Tasmania landing at
Burnie and Devonport.

A new operator, Tiger Airlines has recently started flights into Launceston at discounted prices.

Fares vary greatly, with the general rule being that the earlier you book, the
cheaper the fare.

Airline bookings can be easily made direct on the net, but if you would like
us to make them for you, we will gladly do so. However, most require
immediate settlement, so we will have to ask you for payment in advance.

Travel insurance is recommended for air travel.
